we woke up super early to visit one of the most traditional markets in South Korea
we went pretty early (around 9am?) so the market was less crowded when we arrived.
there were also rows of textile shops and tailors lined in Gwangjang Market for those who want to get some tailor made suits or tops
Directions:
take exit #4 of Euljiro 4(sa)-ga
walk straight until you reach a traffic light and part of the Cheonggyecheon stream.
cross the road and turn right.
ask the locals for 'Gwangjang shijang' (광장시장) and they will point you towards the direction.
walk straight on and look for entrance #2
(there are many entrances but entrance #2 is mainly for food)
turn right and tadaa! - food, glorious food
live octopus - too coward to have this.
Fun fact: you have to chew really fast so that the tentacles don't stick on your tongue or throat.
or so they say.
this was where we had our breakfast.
the stalls in Gwangjang market are basically set up like this.
you sit on the stool at the counter and the 'ahjumma' will serve you with various foods from her stall.
all of which you will pay for after the meal.
ahjumma posed accordingly when i wanted to take a picture!
more jokbal (pork trotters)
japchae! (glass noodles)
naengmyeong (cold noodles) - pretty sourish and spicy and cold,
not really my type but worth the try!
bindaetteok (mungbean pancake)
x
patbingsu (shaved ice with red beans) for dessert
the combination was perfect with cranberries and almonds.
the store we had our patbingsu, directly opposite our breakfast place.
x
a myriad of sidedishes on display
and this store sells gifts for various occasions such as weddings and birthdays.
most of them consists of colored tteok (rice cakes) while some had various seafoods packed neatly.
x
next up, Gyeongbokgung!
