getting off a 7 hour flight in Incheon Airport. every cell in me just came to life. the first thing you see off the plane is korean artists endorsing billboards and posters. everywhere. well not exactly.
passing through immigration, the first thing off the list was to get our T-money card (more info here)why?
1. T-money is essential if you're planning to travel through Seoul using the Metro subway without having to buy tickets at every subway stop.
2. The money on your T-money card is refundable at almost any convenience store. we got our refund at a G25 at the airport. *remember to head to the airport earlier if you're doing your refunds at the airport. remember to leave some time for tax refund too. beautifulbuns give a pretty clear guide as to how to go about on doing your tax refunds that you may read right here.
*for travelers in South Korea right now or in near future may also use the tax refund calculator available right here.
*if i am not mistaken, you will have to reach a minimum of 30,000 krw to be entitled to get a tax refund in designated stores. in my opinion it would be great to plan your purchases and hit a higher amount of purchases to be entitled to more tax refund (i think the refund percentage gets higher ).
also, remember to ask for a tax refund receipt which is separately provided for and keep it inside the receipt envelope as you may read in beautifulbuns' blog. different envelopes are for different tax refund companies in Seoul and keeping them in their respective envelopes will make your tax refund process way less complicated. (different companies, different counters at the airport sort of thing)
3. Our T-money cards were bought at a bookshop near McDonalds at the airport. it was near the escalator that heads directly to the subway - Ashley's place is directly linked to Gongdeok Station and there is a direct line travelling from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station, passing through Gongdeok.
Thoughts:
as we were travelling free and easy, we relied on subway alot. and i am ever thankful for this app - Subway Korea by Malang Studio which you can link right here as pointed out by several blogs and my lovely friend Melanie. i found it very useful as it provides details such as subway arrival times, transfer info and fare estimates which are all pretty accurate. we maneuvered around Seoul pretty successfully all thanks to this wonderful app.
